We’re Still Celebrating! | Shreshtha Ramsumair, MSW

May 19, 2022

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Shreshtha, also known as Mary, arrived in Brooklyn with her parents and three siblings when she was a young teen. After finishing high school, she completed an undergraduate degree in psychology at a state college.

For the last 15 years, she has worked with the New York City Administration for Children’s Services years. Friends she refers to as her “work family,” saw something special in Shreshtha and encouraged her to apply for a supervisory position. All she needed to achieve that goal was to return to school and earn a master’s degree. A colleague told her about a program at a Christian college she was attending. It was the Master of Science in Social Work program at Nyack.

“I contacted an admissions counselor about the program and was hesitant to set up an appointment because of a busy schedule, but an admissions counselor would call me often to remind me to schedule a meeting with her.

Eventually Shreshtha took the big step and made that appointment. “When I walked into Nyack College, there was such a peaceful presence and a sense of belonging. I knew at that point, I wanted to be a part of the Nyack family.”

The School of Social Work at Nyack has relationships with some 200 agencies in the New York Metro area for internship opportunities. Though she was employed as a Child Protective Specialist during her MSW studies, Shreshtha says, “The internships offered great knowledge and skill-building, which I fully appreciated.”

“I cannot say enough good things about all the MSW professors—all are exceptional. The support and compassion from the MSW staff are unlike any other.” To prospective students, she says confidently, “At the end of your academic journey, you will feel empowered as a social worker to go forth and help those in need.”
