
Society of Biblical Literature Conference Features Nyack Bible Faculty

The Society of Biblical Literature will hold its annual conference at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, TX November 20-23, 2021, when professors and students, authors and publishers, religious leaders and laypersons will convene. Two Nyack professors will make presentations at this four-day event, which will be held in-person and virtually.

Dr. R. Steven Notley
On Sunday, November 21, Dr. R. Steven Notley will speak on “Historical Geography and the Development of the Synoptic Tradition” and “Bethsaida-Julias: From κώμη to πόλις.” Dr. Notley has received international acclaim for his work as academic director of the El Araj Excavation Project (EAEP) in Israel. He and his colleague, Dr. Mordechai Aviam of Kinneret College in Israel, who is EAEP archaeological director, will soon write their five-year report on the El Araj dig. The author or co-author of more than a dozens books, Dr. Notley’s impressive publishing career as a Bible scholar includes The Sacred Bridge: Carta’s Atlas of the Biblical World with the late Israeli Tel Aviv University professor emeritus, Anson F. Rainey and books with American Semitic linguist and historical geographer, David Flusser, including The Sage from Galilee: Rediscovering Jesus’ Genius (Eerdmans). Dr. Notley is currently teaching courses at Nyack on New Testament, Parables, and the Churches of Revelation.

Dr. Jeffrey García
On Monday, November 22, Dr. Jeffrey García will present on the topic, “Support the Poor: Charity in the Damascus Document” and “Matthew’s Gospel as a Case of Mutual Illumination.” Dr. García is the author of Understanding the Gospels as Ancient Jewish Literature (Carta) and On Human Nature in Early Judaism: Creation, Composition and Condition (Brill: Ferdinand Schöningh). He is the editor of The Gospels in First-Century Judaea (Brill) and is contracted with Fortress Press to write a volume on “Charity and Mercy in the Gospels and in Ancient Judaism.” In spring 2022, Dr. García will teach New Testament, Galatians, Luke, and Literature Between the Old and New Testament at Nyack.
The conference, co-hosted by the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Academy of Religion, will explore topics in the fields of biblical scholarship and research, religious studies and theology. The Exhibit Hall holds one of the world’s largest collections of books and digital resources for biblical study. In addition, networking space is available for attendees to present ideas to publishers, browse the latest publications and connect with colleagues.
