Remembering Nyack Alumnus Rev. Philip Norman Carl (1930-2022)
June 9, 2022
“I will satisfy him with a long life, And show him My salvation.”
(Psalm 91:16)
The family of Rev. Philip Norman Carl shared the news of his passing this week on Tuesday, June 7 at the age of 91. The 1955 Nyack College alumnus was a resident of Canton, OH and the last surviving sibling of 13 children born to William and Maude Carl of Shamokin, PA.
While earning his undergraduate degree in theological studies, like thousands of residential students on Nyack’s Hillside campus, Rev. Carl met his bride-to-be, Marian Rhoads. He went on to earn a Master of Divinity and subsequently served at two Christian and Missionary Alliance churches and eleven United Methodist churches. Philip and Marian Carl were married for 66 years and were the parents of two sons and a daughter.
Left to cherish precious memories are Mrs. Marian Rhoads Carl and their three children and spouses: Dr. Harold and Gwen Carl, Kenneth and Denene Carl, and Nancy and Sam Gillingham, Jr., along with 10 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
Hours of visitation with the family will be Saturday, June 11, 2022 from 10 am to noon at Grace Fellowship Church, 6282 Nave St, SW, Canton, Ohio. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life, officiated by Pastor Keith Stephens.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the Harold and Frances Rhoads Memorial Scholarship Fund. Gifts may be sent to Nyack College, Office of Advancement, 2 Washington St., New York, NY 10004 or made online. This Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the family and is awarded annually to a student who is preparing to serve in the ministry of evangelism.
The life of Rev. Harold Rhoads is documented in his autobiography, From Paralysis to Pulpit: The Autobiography of “Uncle” Harold M. Rhoads, which tells of his evangelism to children, despite being stricken with polio at the age of five. According to the family, the late Rev. Philip Norman Carl was one of the hundreds of children who were led to the Lord by Rev. Rhoads.
Kenneth Carl, grandson of Rev. Harold Rhoads, edited a new edition of the book (2021), which is sold by Amazon. All proceeds from the sale of the book also go to the Rhoads Memorial Scholarship Fund.
