The Jesse Miranda Center for Hispanic Leadership at Vanguard University, a private Christian university in Costa Mesa, California, will host a virtual event, Cinder Ella: If the Glass Chancla (Slipper) Fits, Wear It! Empowering Latinas for Leadership on Wednesday, October 6, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM (PST).
Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students, Mrs. Wanda Velez, the first Latina appointed to this post on the Nyack College executive leadership team will be a featured panelist. Other panelists include Jeanette Salguero, (Pastor at The Gathering Place and Vice President, National Latino Evangelical Coalition); Lori Ann Farrell Harrison, (Costa Mesa City Manager); and Shannon Grove, (California State Senator). The panel will be moderated by Dr. Itzel Calleja-Macias, Vanguard University, Assistant Professor of biology.
Vice President Velez earned her bachelor’s degree at Nyack in 1999 and a master’s degree at Alliance Theological Seminary in 2002. She is also an alumna of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) Women’s Advanced Leadership Institute (WALI) and the Multi-Ethnic Leadership Development Institute (M-ELDI). She has also served on the CCCU Commission for Chief Student Development Officers. In 2019, she served as a Resource Leader for M-ELDI and is a former commissioner with the CCCU Commission on Diversity and Inclusion.
With a passion for leadership development, the mentoring influence and selfless commitment of Wanda Velez to her Student Development staff and to students for the past two decades has become legendary.
The Jesse Miranda Center for Hispanic Leadership carries out the legacy of the late Pentecostal Hispanic patriarch Jesse Miranda, Jr. The mission of the Center is to educate, equip, and empower Latinx leaders for the purpose of transforming the campus, church, and community through education and partnerships. The Center’s new director is Norlan Hernández, who was appointed earlier this year after a nationwide search.
