Nyack Ball Players Give Fresh Meaning to “Warrior Women”
January 8, 2022
Beating the odds. There’s not a better athletics story to illustrate those words than the Nyack College women’s basketball team 87-77 win against Queens College.
“We started the game with Amani Levitan, Carly Bolivar, Raquel Crooke Losada, and our two captains, Sarah Wilson and Kelsey McCaskill,” Head Coach Rashidi Aikens explains. “Raquel Crooke Losada fouled out with 56 seconds to go when Nyack had a 79-66 point lead. Kelsey McCaskill fouled out with 31 seconds to go with Nyack holding an 81-69 point lead.”
Even with the lead, the game became a nail-biter … even for Coach Aikens.
“Going into this game, I was a bit anxious. We had not played for three weeks. I have never been in a situation in which we were going to have only five players. The five players that we had do bring something special to the team on both ends of the court. At the conclusion of the game, I told them that I was very proud of them and I will never forget this win.”
More than the final score was impressive. Junior Carly Bolivar from Elmont, NY led the Warriors with a game high of 27 points shooting 55 percent from the field, which earned her Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) “Player of the Week.” Team Co-Captain Sarah Wilson, a senior from New Hope, PA scored a double double with 20 points and 10 assists. Amani Levitan followed her lead with 20 points and 7 boards.
This win was one for the books…and one Coach Aikens has on display.
“The box score of this game is hanging up in my office space to serve as a reminder of what can be done when you work hard and you are physically and mentally tough. It was a pleasure to coach that game. Hopefully, we will not be in that situation again.”
With the five-woman team down to just three players, this Nyack triple threat left the court with the decisive victory over Queens College!
Congratulations to Nyack’s Women Warriors, Coach Aikens and his staff!
