May 21 | Racism and Hate Crimes Against the AAPI Community

Dr. Kwi Yun, dean and professor at the Nyack College School of Social Work and Dr. Nathaniel Perez, director of the Center for Racial Reconciliation (CRR) will co-host a virtual conference, “Racism and Hate Crimes Against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: From Trauma to Recovery” on Friday, May 21, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 12 noon (EST). Dr. Perez will moderate a panel discussion with featured presenters.

The keynote speaker for the conference is Jessica Kim, a licensed clinical social worker and certified clinical trauma professional. She is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice. Ms. Kim will address “Recognizing Racialized Trauma in Asian American Mental Health Practice.”

Presenters and the topics they will address are as follows:

Veera Mookerjee, Ph.D. on “Learning from History: Indian American Perspectives. Dr. Mookerjee is the founder and director of Resolveera: Educating Special Needs Parents in Mamaroneck, NY.

Wenhua Lu, Ph.D. on “Racial Discrimination and Research Among Asian Americans. Dr. Lu is an assistant medical professor in community health and social medicine at CUNY School of Medicine.

Ingyu Moon, Ph.D. on “The Mental Health Impact of Anti-Asian Racism” Dr. Moon is an assistant professor of social work at the School of Social Work at Nyack College and president of the Korean American Behavioral Association NY/NJ.

Woochan Shim, Ph.D. on “Being an Asian Woman” Dr. Shim, is professor in the Department of Social Welfare at Daejeon University in South Korea.

Hyoung Yoon Chang, MD., Ph.D. on “Racism and Hate Crime: From Trauma to Recovery” Dr. Chang is a research assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Ajou University School of Medicine, a private research university in South Korea.
