Hosts Gun Violence Summit at Nyack College
New York City Mayor Eric Adams Establishes New Office
to Tackle the Epidemic of Armed Violence
New York, NY—Nyack College, located at 2 Washington Street near Battery Park in Manhattan will be the venue for an inaugural Gun Violence Summit under the auspices of the New York City Office of Faith-Based Initiatives and Community Partnerships on Wednesday, March 16 from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon.
This event represents the collaborative effort of Nyack College/Alliance Theological Seminary (ATS), LEAD NYC, the 67th Clergy Council of New York, the Anti-Defamation League, Faith In New York, Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies (FPWA), New York Disaster Interfaith Services, New York Board of Rabbis, Council of Peoples Organizations, and the Interfaith Center of New York.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently established the Office of Faith-Based Initiatives and Community Partnerships. The Mayor appointed Pastor Gil Monrose as Executive Director of this new office. Pastor Monrose asserts, “All we need to end gun violence in New York City is faith that it can be done, the will to act, and the tools to bring about change.”
Pastor Monrose adds, “This Summit will be about faith-based solutions to reduce gun violence through faith-based partnerships, street-level engagement, and an in-depth look at developing holistic programs and solutions that we can all work on together. We must do our part to end the epidemic of gun violence in New York City.”
The day will begin with a plenary session detailing the purpose and follow-up work of the Summit. In break-out rooms grouped by each New York City borough, leaders will discuss the unique needs and issues associated with gun violence in their communities. This will provide a frontline perspective and understanding of ongoing concerns and resources in each borough.
“This Summit is an important event for our city and a kairos moment for Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary,” says Nyack President Rajan Mathews. “It expands our reach into the communities where our students, faculty and staff live and serve. It is a proud moment in our history as we recognize that many of the attendees and leaders of this event are alumni of our College and Seminary.”
Associate Dean of Alliance Theological Seminary, Rev. Dr. Charles Galbreath, comments on this interfaith gathering. “This is a natural progression of our partnership with New York City’s faith leaders and clergy groups, such as the 67th Clergy Council and its “GodSquad.” Through our Field Education Program, students from ATS currently engage in the faith-based aspect of the Council’s work through internships, developing case studies, and collaborative research.”
