“In the Footsteps of Paul” | GS-L Trip Traces Biblical History

June 6, 2022

What could be better than studying the Bible at Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary?

A trip abroad rich in biblical history that transports students to a classroom without walls!

“In the Footsteps of Paul,” is a course taught in Greece by Nyack Theology and Bible professor, Dr. Amy Davis Abdallah and her husband Ghiath Abdallah. A faculty member since 2002, Dr. Davis Abdallah says, “We go in wonder and the Bible comes alive.”

After the leading the trip together for four years, the Abdallahs note a student favorite. The first stop is a place dedicated to a female leader, Lydia. She was a home church leader in Philippi, entrepreneur and homeowner—who according to the Book of Acts, welcomed the Apostle Paul and Silas into her home.

Over the course of their travels, stops are also made in Thessaloniki, ancient Neapolis, Lydia, Philippi, Amphipoli, Berea, Delphi, Corinth, Athens, Mars Hill, and Santorini. Other highlights of the trip include exploring monasteries at Meteora, as well as the famed Parthenon and the Acropolis Museum.

“We climb the steps to the Areopagus and settle into a place that appears to hold the foundation of an ancient building.” After reading Paul’s famous sermon in Acts 17, Dr. Davis Abdallah says there is silence when they conclude. As they take in the panoramic view of the city, the group sings and prays for the people.

For the past dozen years, Nyack has provided undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to participate in nearly 100 Global Service-Learning courses. Some of the more than 40 different countries students have visited include Israel, Italy, Costa Rica, India, Ecuador, Asia, the Philippines, Hungary and Spain.
