AU Nursing Students and Faculty Serve Migrant Families

December 8, 2022

I will honor each individual under my care
with the knowledge that they are
body, mind, and spirit beings.

I will work to promote wellness in individuals,
families, and communities.

These words, lifted from Alliance University’s Cheryl Phenicie School of Nursing pledge, were put into action recently at the Beacon Christian Community Health Center in Staten Island. The Health Center contacted the School of Nursing for assistance with its health outreach to migrant families.

“Approximately 500 migrant families from South America and Ukraine are in temporary housing on Staten Island,” AU faculty member Dr. Inseon Hwang explains. “Many school-aged children were in need of vaccinations for school enrollment and adults needed flu and COVID vaccines.”

Over a two-day period, three nursing professors and 24 nursing students volunteered to administer vaccinations to some 65 families. Dr. Hwang notes that AU’s bi-lingual faculty and students contributed greatly to the success of serving Spanish-speaking clients. Students also conducted educational sessions on the importance of handwashing and tips on preventing colds.

This opportunity to serve others and to collaborate with like-minded community organizations represents the kind of preparation—beyond the textbook—that Alliance University offers its students.
