A Dialogue on the Value of Christian Higher Education
September 14, 2021
Who could be better equipped to speak fluently about “Why Christian Education Matters,” than the leader of the 45-year-old Council for Christian Colleges Universities (CCCU) that boasts more than 180-member institutions that serve 150 campuses in the U.S. and Canada and 30 more in 19 other countries?
CCCU President Shirley Hoogstra, a 2019 recipient of a Nyack College honorary Doctor of Letters and a Nyack College President’s Hall of Distinction inductee, engaged in an insightful dialogue with two of America’s respected thought leaders David Brooks, political, cultural and social sciences commentator for The New York Times and Anne Snyder, editor-in-chief of Comment, a magazine that explores “the difficult work of being present in culture.”
Mr. Brooks is also the author of several best-selling books including The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life and The Road to Character. Ms. Snyder, a member of the Nyack College Board of Trustees, is also the host of Breaking Ground, a web hub for forward thinking influencers and a podcast, “The Whole Person Revolution.” In addition to penning prolific opinion pieces, she is the author of The Fabric of Character: A Wise Giver’s Guide to Renewing our Social and Moral Landscape.
We are delighted to share the result of this thought-provoking conversation, an article, “The Value of Christian Higher Education,” which first appeared in the Fall 2021 issue of Advance magazine, the CCCU’s biannual publication.
